Understanding Mercury Toxicity
Mercury toxicity from standard dental practice is common. In dentistry the most commonly used material for fillings today is amalgam. Low concentrations of mercury vapor are constantly released from these amalgam fillings, accounting for 70% of mercury ions found in human urine. There have been several clinical studies over recent years, which have reported altered neuro-behavior in dental personnel and this may well be due to chronic exposure to low level mercury vapor.
Mercury is the most poisonous, non-radioactive, naturally occurring substance on our planet. There is no safe level of mercury because even one atom of it in your body is doing some harm to it. There is no debate about the toxicity of mercury and every knowledgeable scientist and health professional understands how poisonous mercury is. Yet even today the American Dental Association (ADA) and pro-amalgam dentists who support its insane, logic defying position, continue to say that the mercury released from these fillings is not a health hazard.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that there is no safe level of mercury. That means that no amount of mercury is safe, not even one atom. Even if enough mercury hasn’t accumulated to manifest a symptom directly or indirectly related to chronic mercury poisoning, it doesn’t mean you are not being poisoned by it. The straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back wasn’t the last straw, it was the sum total of the weight of all of the straws.
The fact is that mercury can directly or indirectly cause, contribute to, or make worse every health issue we will ever deal with. Chronic mercury poisoning from amalgam fillings takes time to accumulate and express a related symptom. Because mercury is found in every cell of the body, and there are trillions of cells, it may take years for enough mercury to accumulate for a symptom to appear. Chronic mercury poisoning is not a disease but an accumulative problem and during the period of time it is accumulating it is poisoning you every step along the way.
I find it very ironic that regulatory agencies require that the materials that make up an amalgam filling, such as mercury, silver, zinc, copper and tin, must be placed in a hazardous waste container when enters the dental office. The old amalgam filling pieces that are removed from a tooth must also be placed in an hazardous waste container. Yet there is no regulation of an amalgam filling when it’s placed in a tooth! Isn’t it logical that because amalgam material is in the tooth that it also makes the tooth a hazardous waste container.
Heavy Metals Damage Neurons
The main SOURCES of mercury toxicity include dental fillings and VACCINATIONS.
While there have been large increases of most neurological and immune conditions among adults over the last 2 decades, the incidence of neurotoxic or immune reactive conditions in infants such as autism, schizophrenia, ADD, dyslexia, learning disabilities, etc. have been increasing especially rapidly in recent years. A report by the National Research Council found that 50% of all pregnancies in the U.S. were resulting in prenatal or postnatal mortality, significant birth defects, developmental neurological or immune conditions, or otherwise chronically unhealthy babies.
Exposure to toxic chemicals or environmental factors appear to be a factor in as much as 28 percent of the 4 million children born each year, with 1 in 6 having one of the neurological conditions previously listed. EPA estimates that over 3 million of these are related to lead or mercury toxicity, with approximately 25% of U.S. infants receiving dangerous levels of mercury exposure. Another study found that prenatal Hg exposure is correlated with lower scores in neurodevelopmental screening, but more so in the linguistic pathway.
A study at the U.S. CDC found “statistically significant associations” between certain neurologic developmental disorders such as attention deficit disorder (ADD) and autism with exposure to mercury from thimerosal‑containing vaccines before the age of 6 months, and a follow on study using federal vaccine data bases confirmed that autism, speaking disorders, and heart arrest have increased exponentially with increasing exposures to mercury thimerosal-containing vaccines. Thimerosal has also been found to cause hormonal effects. Prenatal exposure to mercury has also been found to predispose animals and infants to seizures and epilepsy. There is evidence supporting a link between the aluminum hydroxide used in vaccines causing brain inflammation and symptoms associated with Parkinson’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease), and Alzheimer’s. Brain inflammation has also been found to be a factor in autism.
Other Oral Health Issues of Concern
Along with amalgam fillings and gum disease, there are other oral health issues that can negatively affect systemic health, including:
1. Infected root canals
3. Cavitations (infected extraction sites)
4. Fluoride
5. Non-biocompatible dental materials
6. Other Diseases of the oral cavity
The impact of these oral health issues on overall health is determined by the seriousness and duration of each, and how many are present in the individual.
There is a strong possibility that a patient could be affected by most, or all of the above oral health problems. For example, a patient could have periodontal disease (the most serious form of gum disease), suffer from chronic mercury poisoning, have an infection from a failed root canal, a cavitation infection, an allergic reaction to dental materials, and even fluoride poisoning—all present at the same time.
