There's a saying that goes, "the greatest freedom we hold is the ability to choose one's thoughts." Changing what we think about ourselves, others, our circumstances, and even our disease goes a long way in influencing our recovery.
Practice self-control over your thoughts. Be purposeful in choosing to be grateful, thankful, merciful, and hope-filled. In the psychology of Winnie the Pooh, stop thinking and acting like Eeyore. Count your blessings and BE a blessing to other around you.
A helpful practice may be to spend time each week volunteering for organizations that help people less fortunate than yourself. We all can become a bit narcissistic especially when we don't feel well but an easy cure for self-focus can be helping others in need. Surely there is a soup kitchen, youth group, woman's shelter, or nursing home where people need help. Challenge yourself.
