#6: Biodynamic Wine vs. Organic Wine | The Anne & Ashley Show

Transcript

Ashley
Hi, welcome to the Anne & Ashley Show. I’m Ashley.

Anne
And I’m Anne.

Ashley
And we’re here at Conners Clinic. Our topic today is going to be on biodynamic wine. So we’re going to discuss what it is, where it comes from, how it’s made, and why we should care about it. But before we get started, please make sure to like, subscribe and share our content. If you’re on YouTube, hit the little alert button so you don’t miss an episode. So Anne, what is the difference between organic and biodynamic wine?

Anne
Yes, so organic wine is used with organic grapes, certified organic grapes. Um, there’s no added sulfites in organic wine there’s no fertile, um, fertilizers, um, pesticides, herbicides or GMOs. Biodynamic wine is also all of that. So no chemicals, no sulfites, but it takes everything a step further and incorporating the idea that the whole farm is part of the larger ecosystem and then it takes measures to support the whole ecosystems.

Anne
So essentially you end up with a better grape. So I thought that was pretty interested.

Ashley
That’s super cool. Uh, so biodynamic farming actually began 20 years before organic farming. So it was like the origin to organic farms. So how it’s made is going to be utilizing the whole ecosystem that you just mentioned. Um, as far as nourishing the grapes. And then it also uses the compost to fertilize and that includes having a biodiversity is required for that. So different crops and animals on that farm as well. They also follow a very strict calendar so that lets them know when to harvest prune and water. And then of course when to let nature just take its course. And then this leaves the grapes in the most healthier and vital form as well. But who cares about biodynamic wine? We just want to drink wine, right?

Anne
Right. Well most people do. But really it is important to think about things, you know, not only a wine, you know, the foods that we’re eating as well and how it has grown because things can be riddled with pesticides and all of these chemicals that you buy can have a hard time getting rid of. We all live in this world where we ever exposed to so many different toxins, um, that we’re, we’re taxing our body. And so if we make a responsible choice in choosing things that are lower on the toxicity scale, we’re only doing things to benefit our body so we should be concerned. Um, and also of course the whole ecological perspective in respecting that earth, respecting the land, even the land in a better condition. I mean that’s,

Ashley
Oh, for future general yeah.

Anne
Yeah for future generations we have to be aware of that as well. So, and then also, you know, when we’re talking about genes and chemicals, I mean we weren’t talking about genes but to bring,

Ashley
We can now.

Anne
Genetics into the conversation because that’s part of what we do here at Conners Clinic is talk about genetics.

Anne
Um, we have gene detoxification genes and detoxification pathways and some people have a lot of variance on these pathways, so it’s harder for them to get rid of the large chemicals that we are exposed to. So being mindful of that. Um, and again, Choosing things that are less of a toxic burden can help your body. Um, and then sulfites as well. Sometimes people, you know, get flushed in the face when they drink wine or they feel like they just can’t drink wine because they feel sick from it. That could be because of the sulfites and the wine. So again, the biodynamic wines do not have added sulfites. There’s going to be some that are produced naturally in the fermentation process of creating the wine, but there’s no additional sulfites. So that’s great as well. So all is, you know, supposed to be cleaner, healthier and hopefully not give the hangover or that you can if you just get a really cheap chemical lated wine.

Ashley
Yes.

Anne
That’s why we should care.

Ashley
That is why we should care. Your right. So we have two different wines here. We have a white and a red. There’s a really cool label on the back of these ones in particularly. So, Anne read off what this cool labels says.

Anne
So these are both from a um, uh, Benzinger family winery. So Benzinger is the brand and it says our family pioneered certified sustainable farming 35 years ago because it’s the best way to grow delicious, exceptional grapes with the cycles of nature. Our vineyards are home to sheep, cows, birds, and butterflies who create a vibrant, natural ecosystem. The result is thriving vines with rich, juicy grapes that are full of flavor. So this Chardonnay boast a creamy texture with layered notes of pear apricots and lemon.

Ashley
Ooh, that sounds good.

Anne
Yeah, sounds pretty delicious.

Ashley
Yeah, I really liked that. They put that on there. Yeah. This Cabernet is layered with notes of berry cobbler, mocha, and spice. So it’s.

Anne
That sounds good too.

Ashley
It does sound good. Completely different. Alright. So then we have never had this kind of biodynamic, I’ve never had biodynamic wine ever, but.

Anne
She’s too young. She’s,

Ashley
Yeah.

Anne
Just kidding she is drinking age.

Ashley
I was just gonna say, just to clarify.

Anne
I am not quite there yet. No I’m just kidding.

Ashley
Okay. So, but I am an inexperienced wine bottle opener.

Anne
Oh. Well, if you need help I can.

Ashley
Okay. Yeah, you’ll have to, actually, I’m just going to stab this in here first. I wasn’t supposed to open this top part. Right. Cool. Don’t make fun of me. You know, I always say if you can’t open the bottle you shouldn’t drink it.

Anne
Well, that’s a good practice. Let me help you with that.

Ashley
So then we can drink it.

Anne
Yes, we have to try it so quickly. I mean, I don’t know if this was really matters.

Ashley
I was going to try to cut it, but I didn’t because I couldn’t, that one, it’s a dull end.

Anne
Yeah, it’s not very, here we go.

Ashley
Oh you got it. See more wines in her day than mine.

Anne
Yes, i’ve had a little more with wine drinking Oh, all right. Yeah. It’s not very sturdy.

Ashley
Are you a good pourer?

Anne
I’m so good at pouring wine.

Ashley
Ok good because it’s a white table cloth.

Anne

Ashley

How many people does it take at your household to open a bottles of wine?

Anne
Look it progress.

Anne
That was intense.

Ashley
You saved the video.

Anne
That was a workout. I think we deserve the wine now.

Ashley
I think so too.

Anne

Ashley

Anne
Well let’s do this.

Ashley
Um good idea. It’s on the carpet. That’s fine.

Anne
Yes. Okay. Now there you go.

Ashley
Oh, thank you.

Anne
Let it breath a little bit.

Ashley
Do you have a wine preference? White or red?

Anne
I’m trying them both.

Ashley
No, but in general.

Anne
Oh no I don’t. I like them both.

Ashley
I not, I’m going to try the white one first.

Anne
Okay. I’ll try the white one too.

Ashley
It is very smooth.

Anne
Im not a wine connoisseur.

Ashley
No, me neither. But I can tell if it’s too tart or something.

Anne
It’s not too sweet. It tastes really good. I like it.

Ashley
I do too.

Anne
I definitely would buy that.

Ashley
So red I don’t have much experience with. Usually it’s too tart for me so we’ll see. I gulped really loud,
